Following rapid development in the economy and huge investment in R&D, China is now widely recognised as one of the leading countries of the world in terms of the number of published journals and scientific articles. Surprisingly, as of 4 June 2017, only 71 open access journals from China have been registered in DOAJ, whereas the estimated total number of journals in China is 10,000. Is the open access movement in China is really lagging behind. Xin Bi, DOAJ Ambassador in China, gives his initial findings on the subject.
